Licence Qualification Requirements

Specific Master Cosmetologist Instructor (SMCI)
Requirements for Application & Qualification
The applicant must:
- be a specific licence holder that has been providing cosmetology services for at least five (5) years or more in a registered cosmetology establishment,
- have obtained three (3) professional development credits within the preceding five (years) for SMCI designation, and
- submit an application and pay the fees as required in the By-Laws, noted at Schedule B (click here).
Master Cosmetologist Instructor (MCI)
Requirements for Application & Qualification
The applicant must:
- be a Master Cosmetologist that has been providing cosmetology services for a lest two (2) years or more in a registered cosmetology establishment,
- have obtained two (2) professional development credits for MCI designation, and
- submit an application and pay the fees required in the By-Laws, noted at Schedule B (click here).
Note: MCI designation requires maintenance. All instructors must complete and submit proof of one (1) professional development credit each year to retain MCI designation.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
ADULT EDUCATION TRAINING
Requirements noted herein apply to ALL LICENSED INSTRUCTORS.
The Department of Advanced Education and the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia require all master cosmetologist instructors to obtain and provide proof of adult education training certification.
Milady offers a discount to Association members. To receive the discount, you must register via Tina Lo, NP Group, at tina@npgroup.ca (between 9-5pm EST). DISCOUNT: The Canadian course fee is $947.95 less $50 with Association membership.
REMINDER: Individuals that possess a current and valid Instructor licence are required to obtain one (1) professional development credit per year to maintain Master Instructor designation. See list provided below and additional approved programs found under Esthetics and Hairdressing at https://nscosmetology.ca/membership-benefits/professional-development.

ADVANCED EDUCATION CLASSES
Any individual that possesses a valid cosmetology Instructor licence is required to register any course offered to members with the Cosmetology Association prior to the commencement date of instruction. Licensed Instructors must be working in a registered school of cosmetology or providing Cosmetology Association approved advanced education in a registered cosmetology establishment.
